Meet Sharon

Hello!

I’m thrilled to share my journey with you as a dedicated and passionate professional cellist and teacher. I believe in nurturing a deep love and understanding of music in every student I teach. With over 35 years of cello performing and teaching experience, my commitment to teaching and performing goes beyond imparting technical skills – it’s about fostering a lifelong appreciation for cello playing and musicianship.

The Melbourne Community Cellists was born out of an idea for cellists of all ages and ability levels to play, practise and collaborate together with, in a weekly cello ensemble where they can ultimately share and enjoy musical experiences together.

Melbourne Community Cellists aim to offer exciting playing opportunities for student cellists in Melbourne. Cellists can look forward to a dedicated space and group specifically tailored towards their playing level where they can come together to learn and rehearse together regularly. Concerts will be held twice a year.

Melbourne Community Cellists aims to provide a fun and welcoming platform for cellists to connect, play and grow together musically, on a weekly basis.

Professional Experience

Sharon is a highly respected and sought after cello teacher across Melbourne and has acquired a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the industry. She is a passionate cellist and teacher with a performing and teaching career spanning over 30 years.

Before she embarked upon her professional playing and teaching career, Sharon graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Diploma of Arts majoring in Music Performance on the Cello, in 1991. As a young professional cellist she played regularly with Melbourne orchestras including Orchestra Victoria and the Australian Ballet and Opera Orchestras, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the Melbourne Musicians, the Australian String Ensemble, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She also held the position of principal cellist with the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra (also known as the Aussie Pops Orchestra) for many years. Sharon lived and worked overseas as a professional cellist in her twenties, spending a considerable amount of time creating and performing in unique artistic projects in collaboration with other professional, international artists and musicians.

Over her career as a cello teacher, Sharon’s dedication and enthusiasm of her teaching includes working with the very youngest of cellists starting on their musical journey, through to advanced cello students who have chosen to take their musical studies to VCE Music Performance exams and beyond with musical tertiary studies. She is also experienced with teaching adult students and proudly teaches her oldest cello student at 82 years young!

Sharon is a vibrant and committed teacher to both younger and older generations of cellists and has helped encourage and inspire them to achieve excellent results towards their AMEB exams, VCE exams, music competitions and school music scholarship auditions. She is also passionate to teach those who simply wish to learn the cello for the sheer pleasure of playing. Sharon’s breadth of experience also includes years of working as a cello adjudicator, tutor and conductor of youth and school orchestras, ensembles, music festivals, camps and chamber groups. She has had over 35 years of teaching the cello at numerous private schools in Melbourne and her private teaching studio in Caulfield.
